Bob Sharkey’s “In the Parks” article – July 16, 2008 “You Can Be the Master of the Plan”
We all need a plan – a GPS system to get us to where we are going, or a compass to steer us to our destination. The District’s GPS system and compass is you, the public. The District’s Recreation Master Plan process is in full swing, with input from Berry Creek, Oroville, Forbestown, and the Palermo area so far. We have survey folks out to get your comments in different parks throughout the District. It’s your plan, and they are your parks and programs. Sure, you have heard that before. Sure, it’s all a bunch of Sharkey malarkey. But it’s true. Different Board members will move on at different times. District staff will evolve and change over time. But many of you will be here to enjoy the fruits of the labor of this recreation master plan after we are gone. Call 899-1913 and talk to Greg Melton or Noel Carvalho at Land Image, who are leading the Master Plan update process and collecting all the information and data that is needed. Don’t be an armchair quarterback – get involved. It’s not uncommon for me to hear someone say to me, “It doesn’t matter what I say. The District Board and staff will do what they want.” Ultimately, you are right if you don’t get involved. I have seen many projects and programs sit idle until someone comes along to herald the cause to get something going or done. For example, one of our Board members, Jan Hill, sees the need for a dog park. She’s making it happen. Loren Gill is part of the Berry Creek community, whose desire is to create a community center out of the abandoned Harts Mill Fire Station. John Allen is looking to support the Palermo community to renovate portions of Palermo Park. Vene Thompson heralded the Bedrock Skate and Bike Park. Monique Gurr has been a strong proponent of youth soccer at Riverbend Park. Local resident Jennifer Kremen saw that there was a need for non-competitive youth sports programs, and actively pursued the Junior Giants program for the community. You can do the same. Once again, call Greg or Noel at Land Image at 899-1913. Or come to the final public workshop, which will be held at the Thermalito Grange on Monday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. You can even call 533-2011 and schedule some time to sit down with myself and District staff to voice your ideas. If you can’t make it down to the District office, you can e-mail your input to bob@frrpd.com. We truly welcome all comments, because this Master Plan is once again about you and your community. Don’t let it pass you by, because your voice is important. FRRPD Master Plan Public Workshop Mon., July 21 at the Thermalito Grange Hall, 479 Plumas Ave. 6:30 p.m. Quote “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain Fun Facts What is GPS? GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS is a technology that uses the position of satellites to determine locations on Earth.
